I downloaded the mobile app, created an account, and tapped Yes when asked if I wanted to install a new Netgear product. Speeds - both wired and wireless are working much better than with the old orbi. The Netgear Orbi AX6000 system puts out a notably stronger signal than the Nest Wifi -- and note that both the router and the range-extending satellite appear more or less equally capable. In my smallish, 1,300 square-foot home, the Netgear Orbi AX6000 system was able to hit near-maximum speeds in every room. In our own top speed tests, each system registered speeds that were a lot lower than the specs on the box, which is typical. Along with the support for Wi-Fi 6, that's a welcome piece of future-proofing over the Nest Wifi, where incoming, wired speeds are capped at 1Gbps. The RBK13 comes with basic parental controls courtesy of Disney Circle and uses Netgear's Armor (powered by Bitdefender) to protect your network and clients from malware and viruses, but the RBK852 does not currently offer either feature, although a company rep told me that both are on the roadmap to be added early in 2020. I wouldn't begrudge anyone for splurging on it, but that's the thing -- it's a splurge. I need to make a quick decision before I open the box from CostCo. My internet is between 200 - 400mbps and I don't have a lot of high bandwidth WiFi products attached. After a quick firmware update, the mesh system was up and running. WiFi 6 Access Points and devices are the future of WiFi. With the Nest, my average close-range, living room speed of 283Mbps fell to 165Mbps in my back bathroom, the farthest point from the router. The Orbi router, meanwhile, features a WAN port capable of accepting incoming speeds of up to 2.5Gbps. Sign up for What's New Now to get our top stories delivered to your inbox every morning. He then worked for the now defunct ComputerLand chain of PC dealers before joining PC Magazine in 1987. Both routers do the same thing (distribute wireless signals to your devices on your network). Signal strength isn't the same as speed, mind you, but a stronger signal means that you'll have an easier time hitting those faster speeds. It's admittedly a bit of a small environment for a mesh test, but it still lets me test average speeds from room to room with the router and the extender in controlled locations to get a comparative sense of how these things perform once you take them home. Be respectful, keep it civil and stay on topic. Doing so provides a set of neat-looking heat maps that show how strong the signal is from room to room. A magenta LED indicates that the node has failed to sync with the router. The mobile app opens to a home screen that displays the Orbi status (online or offline) and number of connected satellites. The Netgear Orbi 6 uses the same app as other Orbi devices. As the speed rating (and the price tag) suggests, the AX6000 Netgear Orbi is a more powerful piece of hardware than the Nest Wifi. We thought the Linksys Velop AX MX10's $599.99 price tag for a two-piece system was steep, but at $699.99, the Netgear Orbi Wi-Fi 6 System AX6000 (RBK852) is easily the most expensive kit we've tested to date. The Nest Wifi can't keep up with the Wi-Fi 6 systems in this test, but it beats out every other mesh router that supports Wi-Fi 5. ft with fast WiFi. Is there a comparison chart somewhere that would show me the difference between the AX5700 and AX6000 models? One last point of consideration is security. Even at a reduced street price of some $700, Netgear’s new Orbi WiFi 6 System AX6000 (model RBK852 for a 2-pack or RBK853 for a 3-pack) is still crazy-expensive. I just got it cause it was something new to play with. Keep an eye on your inbox! In the end, you're sort of splitting hairs here, because neither of these routers will offer the same depth of features that you'll get with something like a gaming router. It also supports 4x4 MU-MIMO simultaneous data streaming and signal beamforming and can reach maximum data rates of up to 1,200Mbps on the 2.4GHz band and up to 2,400Mbps on each of the two 5GHz bands. The "missing" 300 are coming from the disabled 1024-QAM on the 2.4 GHz : 2.4GHz AX: 4x4 (Tx/Rx) 256-QAM 40MHz, up to 920Mbps, 5GHz AX: 4x4 (Tx/Rx) 1024-QAM 160MHz, up to 4.8Gbps, 2.4GHz AX: 4x4 (Tx/Rx) 1024-QAM 40MHz, up to 1.2Gbps. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED. Next best in this test was the Asus ZenWiFi AX, which clocked in with a whole-home download average of 272Mbps. Sure enough, in the months that followed, we saw a huge influx of new Wi-Fi 6 mesh systems with faster top speeds, including some that don't cost much more than Nest's (if at all). Inside are eight antennas, a 2.2GHz quad-core processor, 1GB of RAM, and 512MB of flash memory. The RKB53 will probably work just fine in your situation. The Orbi kit is a 12-stream, tri-band AX6000 system that supports the latest Wi-Fi 6 technologies including WPA3 encryption, 1024 QAM, and Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access (OFDMA) data transmissions. https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-AX/Release-date-for-Add-on-Orbi-WiFi6-Satellite-RBS850/m-p/185... https://community.netgear.com/t5/Orbi-AX/Additional-satellites/td-p/1815762/jump-to/first-unread-mes... That was particularly true with the Orbi, which finished as the fastest and most capable mesh router I've ever tested. No anti-malware, parental control, or QoS options. As for the Nest, it wasn't able to score as high as fancier mesh routers like that which cost hundreds more, but it still notched speeds of 612Mbps at five feet and 431Mbps at 75 feet. It edged the Asus router by 6Mbps and was 94Mbps faster than the TP-Link router. They both run the same firmware. And as such, both systems will function differently under different conditions. It delivered solid 802.11ac performance in our testing, comes with malware protection and parental controls, and doubles as a home automation hub. Let's break it down. As a Contributing Editor for PCMag, John Delaney has been testing and reviewing monitors, TVs, PCs, networking and smart home gear, and other assorted hardware and peripherals for almost 20 years. Take that for what it's worth. If you'd like to measure Internet upload and download throughput, tap the Internet Speed tab and run the Ookla-powered Speedtest utility (disclosure: Ookla, like PCMag, is owned by Ziff Davis). At about 10 inches tall, the fin-like Orbi router and its matching satellite are each more conspicuous than the stout, marshmallowy Nest Wifi hardware. And, at $269 for a two-piece setup, the price is a lot easier to stomach -- and I've often seen it on sale for even less. Enjoy 4K/8K UHD streaming and online gaming to multiple screens simultaneously without interruption. The Nest Wifi's average download speeds dipped down as I moved farther from the living room's router. Some devices in my living room would refuse to connect to the satellite which was sitting 6 feet away and would insist on connecting to the main router which was 40 feet away, it drove me crazy trying to figure out why it was doing this  but the AX5700 solved that and everything connects to what is closest to either the router or the satellite. © 2020 CNET, A RED VENTURES COMPANY. That said, we expect more features from such an expensive Wi-Fi system, including things like USB connectivity, parental controls, device prioritization, and protection against malware and viruses. Since the Orbi RBK852 is only the second mesh system that we've tested that uses Wi-Fi 6 technology, we compared it to the Velop AX MX10 kit (also based on Wi-Fi 6) and to the Asus RT-AX88U, a standalone Wi-Fi 6 router. To change your Wi-Fi security settings, share your credentials, and edit your network name, tap the Wi-Fi Settings tab. Nest doesn't list its top-measured speeds for each band, but the overall AC2200 rating indicates that those top speeds add up to a combined total of 2,200Mbps. As for the Nest Wifi, the overall average throughout my house was 222Mbps. The Orbi router and satellite each also feature four gigabit Ethernet jacks -- Nest only includes one spare jack on its router, and none on the satellite at all.
