U.S.A. –-(AmmoLand.com)- With my spring out-of-state travel plans postponed, I decided to travel across the great state of Texas to Palo Duro Canyon, the second-largest canyon system in the United States. The BSA Sweet .22 is outfitted with a bullet drop compensator from 50 to 175 yards. The Marlin Model 60 needs a simple, short-range optic. The Marlin 60 is one of the most popular .22 caliber rifles in existence and is known for its accuracy, reliability, and ease of use. With the Papoose, and Marlin autoloaders in general, I had very good luck and I will say my example has been more reliable long-term than the examples of other take-down rifles I have examined to date. The nut is knurled for easy tightening, but it is also keyed for a spanner wrench for extra torque. Given the intended purpose of the rifle as a gun for hunting small game, most of my targets were small six-inch circles. The barrel is tapered and keyed to line up straight when inserted into the receiver. The Henry is great for kayaking or using as an aircraft survival rifle because it’d take abuse and the rifle fits into the buttstock, whereas the Ruger 10/22 takedown is a a fantastic shooting rifle for about twice the price. The first is the plastic trigger group that interfaces with the stock. The Plinkster is very lightweight, at only 11.5 ounces and 12 a tube length of twelve inches, and this places this scope in an excellent size range for the Marlin Model 60. On the surface, the Papoose doesn't seem like much of a shooter. Once inserted,  the castle nut is tightened over the receiver to complete the assembly of the rifle. Still, producing and assembling a rifle that can fit in a backpack is neat. It even shares some of the same parts: the same guide rod, recoil spring, steel bolt, and dual opposing extractors. The Papoose has clean sights and an overall weather-resistant construction. Technically, this system takes longer than the Ruger 10/22 takedown but it’s simpler. Terril Hebert is a firearm writer native to south Louisiana. The stock is abbreviated and there is no correct way to grip the rifle with the off-hand. The optic is waterproof, debris proof, fog, and shockproof. On my first range trip, I sighted in the rifle, packed it up, and drove around with it in my trunk kit for a few days. Five failures to fully eject after going from a clean gun to putting over three hundred rounds downrange. Its simplicity makes it easy to use for experienced shooters, and aids in the weapon’s reliability. The sights and trigger pull was a great help. The trigger pull is a bit on the mushy side and there is no audible reset when letting the trigger go to ready for the next shot, but it breaks cleanly at just over five pounds. Yes, a 22 airgun might work too, but the Marlin Papooses are generally more portable than big, bad 22 airguns. From the bench, I can put five rounds into a hair over an inch using Federal standard velocity Target loads. Other than dud ammunition, I counted six failures out of the four thousand rounds I put through the rifle. I went with the Henry because everything stored inside the stock. Although the Marlin Model 60 and the Ruger 10/22 are considered to be the be-all and end-all of rimfire rifles with their share of lovers and haters, there is still room for other solid designs if they offer a particular advantage, whether real or perceived. If anything, its a tool that could be lost in the field. For a takedown rifle that is used sparingly but carried a lot, this is OK, but the Ruger 10/22 takedown does not loosen with shooting. It comes with sling studs, but it’s 3 freaking pounds! The Drop Zone (see full specs) gains its name from the bullet drop compensator designed around the drop of the .22 long rifle round. The front sight is protected from being bumped as it is by a metal hood, but the rear sight is exposed on the barrel. The top of the receiver has the standard 3/8 inch groove for mounting a rimfire scope. He loads both revolvers with old-school 148-grain Federal Gold Medal .38 wadcutters. The Marlin 60 fires the .22 long rifle, a small and simple round. The Marlin Papoose is extremely easy to use. Of the three new-in-box Papooses I have owned, none came with a scope. It was not difficult for me to hit a 1/2 sized steel torso target at one hundred yards offhand from the prone. I have an early Papoose and while I have not shot it a lot, I really like it. Other than that, the safety is about right, it’s super easy to takedown, the front sight is highly visible, and it all just works. Although, I have had no issues with it, the flexibility of the plastic may be a breakage concern if the group goes into the stock partway when the bolts are tongued down. With the gun empty, the barrel is pushed into the receiver and the loose castle nut is tightened over the receiver threads. The chamber end of the barrel is chamfered in a way that it can only be inserted one way. A good optic makes it much easier to shoot the Marlin accurately and turns it into a viable small game hunting rifle. See more from Terril on youtube under Mark3smle. In Canada, we can’t use 22 pistols for hunting, and definitely can’t hunt with suppressors, so long barrel 22’s are about as quiet as we can get while still taking down small game. Scourge of God, published in 2017. The Marlin Papoose fits in the price range of the Henry AR-7, but is much nicer to shoot. This results in a handy package which is a mere 24.5 inches long by 8.5 inches wide, and only 2.5 inches thick. The BSA is perfect for the precise target shooters out there, and should be on any list of the best scopes for Marlin 60’s. Plenty of views and plenty of opportunities for accidents. On the last round, the gun locks open so you have a visual indicator that you are out of ammo. The Monte Carlo at the comb on the stock, designed to place the cheek perfectly for an optic, was not an obstacle in picking up the sights. The group needs to come out of the rifle along with the feed throat and the receiver. These type of break down rifles are fun to shoot, but for self-defense they lack the important “intimidating factor” of standard rifle/carbines. So if you’re looking for an inexpensive, simple takedown 22, check out the Marlin Papoose! I also experienced a single stuck fired case that needed to be cleared with a knife. The rear sight had been hit hard enough to bump it out of alignment, somehow. But when it comes to a light, portable rifle that leaves all accessory options on the table without sacrificing features and weight, the Papoose just might be the one rifle to beat. The Drop Zone is equipped with target turrets that are finger adjustable and use a ¼ MOA click value. The only thing that takes any getting used to is the bolt release lever. The Papoose also shares some small parts with the Model 60 and 795 series of rifles, so sourcing spare parts like bolts, extractors, firing pins, magazines, charging handles, etc.
